Interview

Before you sit the citizenship test, you will need to attend an interview. At the interview, staff will confirm your identity and ensure that you are eligible to sit the test.

What to Bring to the Interview

Make sure to bring the original photo identity documents that you provided in your application. These may include a driver's license, passport, or Immicard. You may also need to bring additional documentation as required.

Please note that certified copies or electronic images of your photo ID will not be accepted. If you do not bring a photo ID, your interview will be changed to a later date.

Ensure that you have attached all documents to your application in ImmiAccount. If your circumstances have changed since you lodged your application (such as a change of address or name change), attach your new documents to your application.

Children included in your application do not need to attend the interview. If you have children, arrange for someone to look after them while you attend the interview. Childcare facilities are not provided.

Citizenship Test

The citizenship test is part of the application process for most applicants for Australian citizenship by conferral. Passing the citizenship test will show that you have:

  • a basic knowledge of the English language
  • an understanding of what it means to become an Australian citizen
  • an adequate knowledge of Australia and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
  • an understanding and commitment to Australian values based on freedom, respect and equality.

To pass the test, you must:

  • answer 20 multiple choice questions within 45 minutes
  • answer all 5 of the Australian Values (Chapter 4) questions correctly
  • get a mark of at least 75% overall

Who Sits the Test

People aged between 18 and 59 years on the day which they submit their application for citizenship by conferral generally must sit the test. You will sit the test after your eligibility is checked and your identity is confirmed at your interview.

Who Doesn't Sit the Test

If you are applying for Australian citizenship by conferral, you do not need to sit the test if you are:

  • aged 17 years or younger at the time you apply for citizenship
  • are aged 60 years or over at the time you apply for citizenship
  • are the child of a former Australian citizen who lost their Australian citizenship under specific circumstances
  • were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to an Australian citizen born in Australia (as Australia is now)
  • were born in Australia and are stateless (have never been the citizen of another country and are not entitled to the citizenship of another country)
  • are unable to sit the test due to an incapacity or impairment.

Time and Location

You will receive a letter with the date, time and place of your appointment. The wait time for an appointment may vary.

If you need to reschedule your appointment, follow the instructions in your appointment letter.

Citizenship appointments are held at departmental offices in most Australian capital cities and some Services Australia (Centrelink) offices.

If you lodge your application in Australia, you will attend an interview and sit the test in Australia.

If you lodge your application from outside Australia, you will be invited to attend an interview and sit the test after you return to Australia. In exceptional circumstances you may be arranged to have the citizenship interview and sit the test at an Australian Embassy or Consulate.

Cost

There is no extra cost to sit the citizenship test. The citizenship application fee that you paid includes the test.

What Happens on The Day

Make sure to arrive on time for your appointment.

At the citizenship test centre, a staff member will interview you, verify your identity, and take your photo. If you meet the interview requirements, you will then sit the citizenship test.

Please note that children are not allowed in the test centre.
